DUDELSACK UND KAROMUSTER: SCHOTTLANDRUNDREISE (TEIL I) / BAGPIPES AND TARTANS: SCOTLAND ROUND TRIP (PART I)

Nun habe ich es endlich geschafft, alle Bilder zu sortieren und bearbeiten, so dass ich endlich bereit bin, über unsere Schottlandrundreise zu berichten, die wir Mitte September unternommen haben. Ich werde den Beitrag in 2 Teile portionieren, damit er nicht zu lang wird.

Es begann alles in Edinburgh, wo uns der Flieger abgesetzt hatte. Ab da ging es per Bus weiter. Aber ihr müsst euch bis ans Ende des 2. Beitrags  gedulden, um unsere Eindrücke dieser wunderschönen Hauptstadt Schottlands zu genießen, denn der Bus brachte uns vom Flughafen zunächst nach Glasgow. Dort blieben wir 2 Tage und Nächte.

Finally I managed to sort out and edit all the photos, so that I´m able to report about our Scotland round trip, which we took in mid September. I´ll split my post into 2 halves to avoid it being too long.

The tour started in Edinburgh, where our plane took us. From there the journey continued by bus. But you must be patient until the end of the 2nd post to enjoy the impressions of Scotland´s beautiful capital, because our bus took us right away from the airport to Glasgow. There we spent 2 days and nights.

Glasgow

Glasgow ist Schottlands größte Metropole. Die Stadt am River Clyde, die einst im Industriezeitalter für ihren Schiffsbau bekannt war, ist heute in Sachen Kultur, Architektur und Design, und vor allem Shopping, die Stadt Nummer Eins in Schottland. An die alten Werften erinnert noch dieser alte Hebekran:

Glasgow is Scotland’s biggest metropolis. This city at the River Clyde, which was famous for ship building during the industrial age, nowadays is Scotland´s number one in terms of culture, architecture and design, and especially shopping. This old crane still reminds of the old shipyards:

Der besondere Reiz Glasgows ist im direkten Nebeneinander von moderner und historischer Architektur begründet.

Beispielhaft für die moderne Architektur Glasgows ist das Riverside Museum, in dem historische Autos, Fahrräder, Lokomotiven, Straßenbahnen und Busse ausgestellt sind. Besonders sehenswert ist ein Straßenzug aus dem Industriezeitalter, inklusive Pferdegespann und U-Bahnstation. Aber auch die Mode kommt nicht zu kurz!

Glasgow´s special charm results from the direct side by side of modern and historical architecture.

Exemplary for Glasgow´s modern architecture is the Riverside Museum, which exhibits historical cars, bicycles, lokomotives, trams and busses. A special feature is a road section of the industrial age, including a cart and horses and a subway station. But fashion is not too short either. 

Das älteste Haus Glasgows aus dem Jahre 1471 bildet einen starken Kontrast zum Riverside Museum.

Ganz in der Nähe dazu befindet sich die gotische St. Mungo´s Kathedrale aus dem 12. Jahrhundert mit interessantem Dachgebälk und wunderschönen Fenstern. Die Lampen vor der Kirche zeigen wichtige Symbole Glasgows: Vogel, Baum, Glocke und Fisch:

Quite near to it you find the gothic St Mungo´s Cathedral from the 12th century with interesting roof beams and beautiful windows. The lamps in front of the church show important symbols of Glasgow: Bird, tree, bell and fish:

Neben der Kirche befindet sich der Eingang zu dem auf einem Hügel gelegenen Friedhof Necropolis mit seinen unzähligen Grabmalen. Es lohnt sich sehr, dort hinauf zu steigen, denn von oben hat man einen wunderschönen Blick auf die Stadt und die Kathedrale:

Next to the church is the entrance of the cemetery Necropolis with its uncountable tomb monuments, located on a hill. It´s really worth climbing up there, because you can enjoy a wonderful view over the city and the cathedral:

   

Stirling

Stirling kann man als Tor in die Highlands betrachten. Schon von Weitem beeindruckt einen das mächtige Stirling Castle aus dem 16. Jahrhundert, das Jacob V. für seine Frau Marie de Guise, der Mutter von Maria Stewart, erbauen ließ.

Stirling can be considered the gate into the Highlands. Mighty Stirling Castle from the 16th century, which Jacob V had built for his wife Marie de Guise, mother of Mary Stewart, already impresses from the distance.

Vom Burghof aus sieht man in der Ferne das William Wallace Monument, das an die Schlacht von Stirling Bridge erinnert, in der William Wallace 1279 die Engländer besiegte. Die Geschichte um William Wallace wurde in Braveheart verfilmt. Allerdings geschichtlich etwas verfälscht.

From the castle courtyard you can see the William Wallace Monument in the distance, which reminds of the battle at Stirling Bridge in 1279, when William Wallace defeated the English. The story of William Wallace was told in the film Braveheart. Actually historically a bit distorted.

 

Die Highlands

Unser Weg in die Highlands führte uns zunächst zum Loch Lomond. An diesen wunderschönen See, der auch in einem Lied von Alistair McDonald besungen wird, grenzt auch ein gleichnamiger Nationalpark.

Our journey into the Highlands first took us to Loch Lomond. On this beautiful sea borders a national park of the same name. Alistair McDonald wrote a song about Loch Lomond.

Danach fuhren wir nach Glencoe, dem großen Tal, in dem der Fluss Coe in den Meeresarm Loch Leven mündet. Glencoe wird auch das ´Tal der Tränen` genannt . Dieser traurige Name bezieht sich auf das Massaker von Glencoe im Jahre 1692. Damals ermordete der Clan der Campbells fast den gesamten Clan der McDonalds von Glencoe, nachdem sie ausgiebig deren Gastfreunschaft genossen hatten. Versteht sich, dass der Name Campbell bis heute in den Highlands nicht gerade beliebt ist!

From there we went to Glencoe, the great valley where the river Coe flows into the inlet Loch Leven. Glencoe is also called ´Valley of Tears`. This sad name refers to the Massacre of Glencoe in the year 1692. This was when the Campbells´clan murdered nearly the whole clan of the Mc Donalds, after having enjoyed their hospitality to the fullest. It´s no surprise that even today the name Campbell is not very much appreciated in the Highlands.

Es ging weiter durch Fort William zum Ben Nevis, der mit 1344m der höchste Berg der Highlands bzw. Schottlands ist. Leider wollte er nicht fotografiert werden und versteckte sich hinter grauen Wolken in der Mitte des Bildes. Schade!

Our bus took us through Fort William to Ben Nevis, which is  the highest mountain of the Highlands and of Scotland with its height of 1344m. Unfortunately Ben Nevis didn´t want to be photographed and hid behind big grey clouds in the middle of the pic. What a pity!

An Loch Lochy und Loch Oich entlang ging es nach Fort Augustus am unteren Ende von Loch Ness. Alle drei genannten Lochs sind Teil des Kaledonischen Kanals, der Fort William mit Inverness verbindet. Die Lochs sind alle durch den künstlich erbauten Teil des Kanals verbunden, wodurch aus dem nordwestlichen Teil Schottlands eine Insel wird. Bevor der Kanal in Fort Augustus in Loch Ness übergehen kann, muss er 5 Staustufen überwinden, die unmittelbar hintereinander liegen. Das ist die größte Attraktion von Fort Augustus!

Along Loch Lochy and Loch Oich we reached Fort Augustus at the lower end of Loch Ness. All these three Lochs are part of the Caledonian Canal, which connects Fort William with Inverness. The Lochs are connected by the artificially constructed part of the canal which makes an island of the norh-western part of Scotland. Before the canal can flow into Loch Ness in Fort Augustus, it has to overcome 5 barrages which are right one behind the other. This is the most interesting attraction of Fort Augustus!

So, das war der erste Teil meiner Reise. Im Zweiten Teil geht´s zum Loch Ness, nach Inverness, entlang des Whisky Distillery Trail und dann schließlich nach Edinburgh. Nicht verpassen, es lohnt sich!
