SCHOTTLANDRUNDREISE (TEIL II) / SCOTLAND ROUND TRIP (PART II)

Der erste Teil meines Schottland-Reiseberichtes endete in Fort Augustus. Von dort ging die Reise weiter durch die faszinierende Landschaft der Highlands Loch Ness entlang. Auf halbem Weg nach Inverness ragt die Ruine von Urquhart Castle in den See. Diese Befestigung kontrollierte im Mittelalter den Zugang ins Great Glen, denn sie lag strategisch äußerst günstig.

The first part of my Scotland travel report ended in Fort Augustus. From there the journey proceeded across the fascinating landscape of the Highlands along Loch Ness. Half way to Inverness the ruin of Urquhart Castle extends into the Loch. In the Middle Ages this fortress controlled the entrance into the Great Glen because it was strategically very well situated.

 

Inverness

Am oberen Ende des kaledonischen Kanals, dort wo Loch Ness in den River Ness übergegangen ist, liegt das hübsche Inverness, die Hauptstadt der Highlands. Auf dem Burghügel liegt das Castle aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, das heute den Sheriff Court beherbergt. Früher war an dieser Stelle eine Festung.

At the upper end of the Caledonian Canal, where Loch Ness merges into River Ness, lovely Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, is located. Up on the hill we find the Castle of the 19th century, which nowadays houses the Sheriff Court. In older times there was a fortress in this place.

 

Gegenüber der Castle Road liegt der Ness Walk mit wunderschönen alten Wohnhäusern und Hotels.

Opposite Castle Road  Ness Walk leads along lovely old residential buildings and hotels.

 

Aber auch in die andere Richtung des River Ness bietet sich ein schönes Panorama.

But in the opposite direction of River Ness you may also enjoy a beautiful panorama.

 

Mir gefielen die alten Häuser mit den zahlreichen Kaminen besonders gut. Die Zahl der Kamine gab früher Aufschluss darüber, wie viele Feuerstellen man sich leisten konnte, mit anderen Worten wie wohlhabend man war. Einige Leute haben daher Fake-Kamine aufs Dach gesetzt!

I liked the old houses with their numerous chimneys very much. The number of chimneys once indicated how many fireplaces the owners could afford, in other words how prosperous the owners were. That´s why some people errected fake chimneys on their roofs!

 

Whisky Distillery Trail

Östlich von Inverness liegt die Region Speyside. Hier findet man den auf der Welt einzigen Malt Whisky Trail, ein Zusammenschluss der zahlreichen Destillen dieser Gegend. Mindestens eine davon sollte man sich unbedingt anschauen und den Entstehungsprozess des Speyside Malt Whisky kennen lernen. Wir besuchten die Glen Moray Destille in Elgin. Obwohl ich keinen Whisky mag, genoss ich den Duft, der über dem gesamten Anwesen lag.

East of Inverness lies the region of Speyside. Here we find the world´s only Malt Whisky Trail, an amalgamation of numerous distilleries of this region. You should at least visit one of them to learn about the distillery process of Speyside Malt Whisky. We visited Glen Moray Distillery in Elgin. Although I don´t like whisky, I enjoyed the scent which was perceptible at the complete estate. 

 

 

 

 

 

Highland Hotel Balavil in Newtonmore

Wir verließen nun die Highlands und unser Hotel Balavil in Newtonmore, in dem wir uns sehr wohl gefühlt haben, und in dem es abends immer Life-Musik gab.

We left the Highlands and our Hotel Balavil in Newtonmore, where felt very well accomodated, and where we enjoyed life-music every evening.

 

Firth of Forth

Auf unserem Weg zurück nach Edinburgh mussten wir den Firth of Forth überqueren. Unser Busfahrer wählte die neue, über 2600m lange Brücke Queensferry Crossing, eine technische Meisterleistung, die die alte Forth Road Bridge ergänzt.

On our way back to Edinburgh we had to cross the Firth of Forth. Our bus driver chose the new, 2600m long bridge Queensferry Crossing, a technical masterpiece, which complements old Forth Road Bridge.

 

Die Dritte im Bunde ist die Forth Bridge, über die die Eisenbahn von Edinburgh nach Perth und weiter nach Dundee und Aberdeen fährt. Diese Brücke ist Weltkulturerbe:

The third in the league is Forth Bridge, which is the railway crossing from Edinburgh to Perth and further on to Dundee and Aberdeen. This bridge is World Hertitage.

Edinburgh

Wie zu Beginn des ersten Teils angekündigt, war Edinburgh unsere letzte Station in Schottland. Aber wie heißt es so schön: Last but not least. Diese Stadt ist so wunderschön, dass einem an jeder Ecke der Mund offen stehen bleibt.

Unsere Sightseeing-Tour führte uns zunächst zum Palace of Holyroodhouse, das sich am unteren Ende der Royal Mile befindet. Hier wohnte einst auch Maria Stewart. Im Park des Schlosses befindet sich noch ihr einstiges Badehäuschen. Heute ist Holyroodhouse Queen Elizabeths offizielle Residenz in Schottland.

As mentioned at the beginning of part I, Edinburgh was our last destination in Scotland. But how is the saying: Last but not least. This city is so beautiful, that you stop and stare at every corner.

Our sightseeing tour first took us to Palace of Holyroodhouse, which is located at the low end of the Royal Mile. This is where Mary Stewart once lived, too. You still find her little bathhouse in the park of the palace. Today Holyroodhouse is Queen Elizabeth´s official residence in Scotland.

 

Ganz in der Nähe des Palastes befindet sich das schottische Parlament, eines der modernen Gebäude in Edinburgh.

Quite near to the palace the Scotish Parlament, one of the modern buildings in Edinburgh, is situated.

 

Am oberen Ende der Royal Mile türmt sich Edinburgh Castle auf dem Castle Rock, einem erloschenen, 340 Millionen Jahre alten Vulkan auf. Diese alte Verteidigungsanlage  wird noch heute von einer britischen Garnison genutzt.

At the upper end of the Royal Mile Edinburgh Castle raises up upon the Castle Rock, an 340 Million years old extinct volcano. This old fortress is still in use by a British garrison.

 

 

 

 

Auf dem Weg zur Burg trifft man auch den ein oder anderen Dudelsackspieler:

On our way to the castle we met some bagpipers.

 

Wenn man in Schottlands Hauptstadt ist, ist es ein Muss, sich in einer Tartan Mill die Entstehung der schottischen Karostoffe anzuschauen.

When you are in Scotland´s Capital it is obligatory to visit a Tartan Mill and watch how the Scotish Tartans are made.

 

Edinburgh ist so wunderschön, da ist die Fotokamera im Dauereinsatz!

Edinurgh is so beautiful, that you simply can´t stop taking photos!

 

Von Edinburgh aus flogen wir wieder nach Hause, voll von atemberaubenden Eindrücken, von denen wir noch lange zehren werden!

Ich hoffe, mein Schottlandbericht hat euch gefallen und ihr habt einen Eindruck bekommen. Ich kann nur jedem empfehlen, dieses wunderschöne Land einmal kennen zu lernen!!!

From Edinburgh we flew back home, filled up with breathtaking impressions, that we can live off for a long time!
