Anfang September haben wir gut zwei Wochen in der Provence verbracht. Ich finde, das ist die beste Reisezeit für den Süden Frankreichs. Die große Hitze ist dann vorbei, aber bei 25-30 Grad ist es noch warm genug, um im Pool oder im Mittelmeer zu planschen und nicht mehr zu heiß, um Ausflüge zu machen. Unser Ferienhaus, das keine Wünsche offen ließ, lag auf einem Hügel, nicht weit von Saint Remy de Provence in einem Dorf namens Eyragues. Von dort aus haben wir den Teil der Provence erkundet, den wir noch nicht kannten. Ich will hier keinen Reiseführer schreiben, sondern einfach die Bilder sprechen lassen.
At the beginning of September we spent a bit more than two weeks in the Provence. I think that’s the best time for visiting the south of France. The biggest heat is over then, but at 25-30°C it’s still warm enough to enjoy the pool or the Mediterranean Sea, and it’s not too hot to go for trips. Our holiday home, which left nothing to be desired, was situated on a hill near Saint-Remy-de-Provence in a little village named Eyragues. That was our base from which we explored the part of the Provence, we didn’t know yet. I don’t intend to write a travel guide here, but just let the pictures do the talking.

Tatsächlich habe ich Christo auch einmal persönlich getroffen, als er an der Kölner Universität einen Vortrag gehalten hat und nach Volontären für sein Reichstags-Projekt in Berlin suchte. Natürlich habe ich mich auch dafür angemeldet (hatte ich mich doch auch wärend meines Studiums ausgiebig mit Christo beschäftigt)! Aber als es dann soweit war, kam mir leider eine Schulter-OP dazwischen. Als dann die Verhüllung des Arc de Triomphe in Paris konkret werden sollte, war mir sofort klar, dass ich dort hin musste. Also wurde für September 2020 eine Parisreise gebucht. Leider kam Corona dazwischen und sowohl Projekt als auch Reise mussten verschoben werden. Aber Ende September diesen Jahres war es nun endlich so weit!!!
Actually I once met Christo personally when he gave a lecture at Cologne University, looking for volunteers for his project Wrapped Reichstag in Berlin. Of course I signed in too (after having dealt extensively with Christo during my studies)! When the time came, a shoulder surgery unfortunately crossed my plans. When Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, should be realized, it was immediately clear to me, that I had to go there. So a Paris trip was booked in 2020. Unfortunately Covid came and the project as well as the Paris trip had to be postponed. But by the end of September this year the time had finally come!!!

Man sieht, glaube ich, meiner Körperhaltung an, dass ich es nicht erwarten konnte, das Kunstwerk aus der Nähe zu sehen. / The next day we were getting closer to the matter. wenn man an der Côte d´Azur ist, darf natürlich auch der Besuch von Cannes und Nizza nicht fehlen. Außerdem ist es ein Muss, im Mittelmeer zu baden. Und an der Kunst kommt man auch nicht vorbei, denn viele berühmte Maler wie Picasso, Matisse, Chagall und viele andere haben sich hier aufgehalten. Über das Picasso-Museum in Antibes habe ich ja schon im ersten Teil berichtet.

when you´re staying at the Côte d´Azur you mustn´t miss visiting Cannes and Nizza. It´s also a must to swim in the Mediterranian Sea. And you can´t help but enjoying some art, because many famous artists like Picasso, Matisse, Chagall and many others have stayed here. I´ve already posted about the Picasso Museum in Antibes in Part1.
Cannes
Wer an Cannes denkt, der denkt an die Schönen und Reichen dieser Welt, an feudale Hotels wie das Carlton, an Luxusgeschäfte wie z.B. Chanel, Prada, Gucci, an die Filmfestspiele, die Croisette und auch an den Strand. Um einen ersten Eindruck von dieser Stadt zu erhalten ohne sich Blasen an den Füßen zu holen, kann man eine Rundfahrt mit einer Bimmelbahn machen. So kommt man auch an Stellen, die man zu Fuß nur sehr mühsam erreichen würde. Hier sind meine Eindrücke:
Cannes
When you think of Cannes, you think of the rich and the beautiful of this world, of luxurious hotels like the Carlton, of designer shops like Chanel, Prada, Gucci, of the Film Festival, the Croisette and also of the beach there. To get a first impression of this town without getting blisters on your feet, I can recommend a city tour by tourist train. That enables you to see places, you would hardly see when walking. These are my impressions:
Nizza
Meine Hauptmotivation, mir Nizza näher anzuschauen, war der Besuch des Musée Matisse. Wir waren zwar schon ein paar mal durchgefahren und hatten auch einmal angehalten, um in der Altstadt ein Socca zu essen, aber mehr hatten wir noch nicht gesehen. Wir hatten Lust auf mehr. Im Tourist Information, wo wir uns einen Stadtplan besorgt hatten, mussten wir dann leider feststellen, dass das Museum ausgerechnet an dem Tag, der für Nizza reserviert war, geschlossen hatte. Dumm gelaufen…
Aber es blieb ja noch ein Bummel durch die Altstadt, bei dem es auch viel Interessantes zu erkunden gab, z.B. das Rathaus, das Opernhaus, das Gerichtsgebäude und mehrere Kirchen. Ein kurzer Abstecher zu Karl Lagerfeld lohnte sich leider nicht, denn der Laden führte fast ausschließlich Männersachen.
Natürlich durfte auch ein Bummel über die Promenade des Anglais nicht fehlen, von wo aus man das Strandleben von Nizza beobachten konnte.
Nice
My main motivation to take a closer look at Nice was to visit the Matisse Museum. We had already passed through Nice a few times before and once even stopped to eat Socca in the old town, but that was all we had seen. We felt like seeing more. When picking up a street map at the Tourist Information we got aware that the Matisse Museum was closed that very day, that was meant to visit it. Shit happens…
But there was still a stroll through the old town, which offered a lot of interesting things to discover, e.g. the town hall, the opera house, the courthouse and several churches. A short detour to Karl Lagerfeld wasn´t worth it at all, because the shop mainly offered men´s clothing.
Of course a walk along the Promenade des Anglais should not be missing, from where you can watch the beach life of Nizza.
Vence
Nachdem wir das Matisse-Museum in Nizza verpasst hatten, wollten wir uns wenigstens die Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence ansehen. Henri Matisse designte diese Kapelle für die Dominikanerinnen aus Dankbarkeit für die Fürsorge durch Schwester Jacques-Marie, die ihn nach einer schweren Operation gesund pflegte. Matisse führte das gesamte Projekt durch: Er machte die architektonischen Zeichnungen, entwarf Keramikbilder, bunte Glasfenster, Skulpturen, Möbel und sogar Kirchengewänder. Er arbeitete 4 Jahre an diesem Projekt. Der Besuch dieser Kapelle ist sehr beeindruckend und unbedingt zu empfehlen!
Vence
At least we wanted to visit the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, after we had missed the Matisse Museum in Nizza. Henri Matisse designed this chapel for the Dominican sisters of Vence in gratitude for the cares of Sister Jacques-Marie after a major surgery. Matisse carried out the complete artwork: He made the architectural design, created ceramic panels, stained glass windows, sculptures, furniture and even church vestments. He committed himself to the project entirely for 4 years. I highly recommend to visit this chapel, it´s very impressing!
Der Strand in Cagnes-sur-Mer
Natürlich haben wir außer unseren Pool auch das 28° warme Wasser des Mittelmeeres genossen (ich hatte extra meine Schwimmnudel mitgenommen). Der Strand von Cagnes-sur-Mer war nur ca. 3,5 km von unserem Ferienhaus entfernt. An der Cote d´Azur gibt es fast überall nur Kieselstrände, so dass wir immer einen Beachclub aufsuchten. Hier gab es Sonnenliegen, Schirme, Handtücher, Umkleiden und Duschen. Außerdem konnte man hier kalte Getränke und leckere Snacks bekommen.

Of course we not only enjoyed the pool of our house, but the 28° warm water of the Mediterranian Sea as well (I had taken my swimming noodle especially for this purpose). The beach at Cagnes-sur-Mer was only 3,5 km away from our home. There are only pebble beaches at the Côte d´Azur. That´s why we always went to a beach club. There you had sun beds, umbrellas, towels, a changing room and showers. Furthermore you could get cold drinks and tasty snacks there.
Habt ihr nun auch Lust auf Südfrankreich bekommen? Wir fahren auf jeden Fall bald wieder hin! / Are you ready for the south of France now? We will definitely go again soon!
eigentlich wäre jetzt, Ende September / Anfang Oktober die beste Zeit, um nach Südfrankreich zu reisen. Wir waren allerdings in der zweiten Julihälfte dort und hatten Glück, dass es maximal 33°C warm war. Es kann dann nämlich auch über 40°C heiß werden. Unser Feriendomizil lag unterhalb des malerischen Dorfes Saint Paul de Vence. Dies war der ideale Ausgangspunkt, um die Côte d´Azur zu erkunden, aber auch einige Städtchen, die mehr im Landesinneren liegen wie Vence oder Grasse. Ich will hier gar nicht viele Worte machen, sondern lieber die Bilder sprechen lassen
Hi my dear readers,
now, that is late September / early October, would actually be the perfect season for visiting the south of France. However, we were there in the second half of July, and we were lucky that it was only 33°C maximum. Temperatures can be over 40°C then. Our holiday property was situated below Saint Paul de Vence. This was the ideal starting point for exploring the Côte d´Azur and some places more inland like Vence or Grasse. I don´t want to spoil too many words now, I think the pictures speak for themselves:
Saint Paul de Vence
Der historische Kern dieses malerischen Ortes liegt auf einem Berg, nicht weit von der Küste entfernt (auf dem ersten Bild sieht man das Meer am rechten Bildrand). Er besticht durch seine zahlreichen Galerien, wunderschönen Geschäfte, einladenden Cafés und die liebevoll gestalteten alten Häuser, Gärten und Plätze. Wer einmal hier war, will immer wieder hin!
The historic center of this picturesque village is situated on a hill, not far away from the coast (you can see the sea on the right edge of the first picture). St. Paul impresses with its numerous galleries, beautiful shops, inviting cafés and lovingly arranged old houses, gardens and squares. Whoever was here wants to come again!
Menton
Das Städtchen liegt fast an der Grenze zu Italien, und dieser Einfluss ist auch überall spürbar. Auf dem Weg dorthin kommt man an Cap Ferrat vorbei (erstes Bild), eine Landzunge mit einer sehr schönen Hafenanlage und ruhigen Badebuchten. Aber auch Menton besitzt einen Yachthafen und einen schönen Sandstrand.
This town is not far from the Italian border, and this influence is palpable everywhere. On our way there we passed Cap Ferrat (first picture), a lovely promontory with a very nice port and quiet swimming bays. But Menton has also got a beautiful marina and sandy beach.
Grasse
Das Städtchen wurde durch den historischen Roman Das Parfum von Patrick Süskind weltbekannt. Ein Bummel durch die alten Gassen mit den sehr interessanten Geschäften und Galerien ist sehr empfehlenswert. Außerdem ist auch der große Markt (jeden Dienstag) ein kulinarischer und modischer Augenschmaus. Ein Muss ist natürlich auch die Besichtigung einer Parfumfabrik!
This town gained world fame by the historical novel DAS PARFUM by Patrick Süskind. A stroll through the narrow old streets is highly recommended. But also the big market (every Tuesday) is a culinary and fashionable eye candy. And visiting a perfume factory is a must here!
Antibes Juan-les-Pins
Diese historische Stadt ist sehr facettenreich. Einige von ihnen möchte ich euch hier zeigen: Die engen historischen Straßen, das Rathaus, die alte Stadtmauer, den alten Hafen, wo die älteren Herren Boule spielen, den provencialischen Markt und natürlich das alte Château der Familie Grimaldi, das 1945 zum Museum Grimaldi wurde. 1946 nutzte Picasso ein halbes Jahr lang einen Raum des Museums als Atelier und schenkte der Stadt anschließend die hier entstandenen Werke. Aus seinem Nachlass kamen später noch etliche Werke hinzu. Picasso traf hier auch andere Maler, z.B. Matisse, dessen Malweise ihn in seinem Spätwerk beeinflusste. Seit 1966 heißt das Museum Picasso Museum.
This historic town is very diverse. I´d like to show you some of the attractions: The narrow old streets, the city hall, the old town wall, the old port, where senior gentlemen play boule, the Provencial market, and of course the old chateau of the Grimaldi family, that turned into the Grimaldi Museum in 1945. 1946 Picasso used one of the museum´s rooms as his studio for half a year of working. After that he donated all the works created there to the museum. There were quite some more works added after he had died. Picasso met other artists here, e.g. Henri Matisse, whose manner of painting influenced Pisasso in his late work. Since 1966 the museum has been called Picasso Museum.
Antibes hat natürlich auch moderne Elemente wie z.B. das Riesenrad vor der Stadtmauer mit einer sehr hübschen Chill-Out-Area davor.
Of course Antibes has many modern elements too such as the ferris wheel outside the town wall with a lovely chill out area in front.
An dieser Stelle möchte ich meinen Beitrag erst mal beenden, denn ich merke gerade, dass er ein wenig lang zu werden droht. In einem weiteren Beitrag werde ich über Cannes und Nizza berichten, über einen Besuch in Vence und auch – das darf natürlich in einem Urlaub in Südfrankreich nicht fehlen – über das Strandleben in Cagnes-sur-Mer.
At this point I would like to end my post for today, because I´m afraid it would turn out too long. I will report in a separate post about Cannes, Nizza, a visit to Vence and also – of course that should not be missing during a holiday in the south of France – about beach life in Cagnes-sur-Mer.

DOMINIKANISCHE REPUBLIK, La Romana
Die Dominikanische Republik ist Teil der Insel Hispaniola. Der andere Teil ist Haiti. Die Hauptstadt heißt Santo Domingo. Die Insel ist wegen ihrer schönen Strände und der wunderschönen, abwechslungsreichen Landschaft ein beliebtes Urlaubsziel. Außer vom Tourismus leben die Einwohner vom Export von Zuckerrohr, Bananen, Melonen und Tomaten. Außerdem steht hier die größte Zigarrenfabrik der Welt.
Man hatte uns geraten, nicht auf eigene Faust an Land zu gehen. Daher machten wir eine kleine Bustour zu einem wunderschönen Strand, wo wir einmal mehr das karibische Meer genießen konnten.
The Dominican Republic is part of Hispaniola. The other part is Haiti. The Capital is Santo Domingo. Due to its beautiful beaches and lovely, diversified landscape the island is a popular holiday destination. Despite tourism the inhabitants live from the export of sugarcane, bananas, melons and tomatoes. Furthermore you find the world biggest tobacco factory on this island.
We were advised not to leave the ship on our own. So we took a bus trip to one of the most beautiful beaches, where we coul enjoy the Caribbean Sea once again.

MARTINIQUE, Fort de France
Der schönste Sonnenaufgang dieser Reise erwartete uns bei der Ankunft in Fort de France, der Hauptstadt von Martinique. Wir waren schon einmal auf dieser Insel und freuten uns darauf, einen Rundgang durch die Stadt zu machen und bekannte Orte wiederzusehen. Martinique gehört zu Frankreich und somit zur Europäischen Union. Man kann daher hier mit Euro bezahlen. Der Name der Insel bedeutet „Blumeninsel“ und diesen trägt sie mit Recht. Außer der üppigen Vegetation verfügt Martinique über wunderschöne Sandstrände, Regenwald und Zuckerrohr- und Ananas-Plantagen.
In Fort de France wird – wie in der gesamten Karibik – ein Mann namens Victor Schoelcher besonders verehrt. Er war ein französischer Politiker, der 1848 die Sklaverei in Frankreich und dessen Kolonien endgültig abschaffte. Daher widmete ihm die Stadt eine Statue und eine Bibliothek. Eine weitere Statue erregt das Interesse der Besucher, nämlich die von Kaiserin Josephine, der Ehefrau Napoleons. Sie wurde auf Martinique sehr verehrt. Das änderte sich jedoch, als sie Napoleon überredete, die Sklaverei wieder einzuführen, weil sie ohne Sklaven nicht auskam. Als Anfang der 1990er Jahre ein unbekannter „Attentäter“ die Statue enthauptete und mit Blut befleckte, hielt es daher niemand für nötig, sie zu restaurieren.
The most beautiful sunrise of the journey waited for us when we arrived in Fort de France, which is the capital of Martinique. We have already been here before and were now looking forward to visit familiar places. Martinique belongs to France and so to the European Union. That means you can pay with Euro here. The name of the island means „Flower Island“, and that is justified. Except the lush vegetation Martinique has beautiful sandy beaches, rain forest and plantations of sugarcane and ananas.
In Fort de France – like in the entire Caribbean – a man named Victor Schoelcher is especially revered. He was a French politician who finally abolished slavery in France and all its colonies. That´s why the city dedicated a statue and a library to him. There is another statue which attracts attention to the visitors, and that´s the one of empress Josephine, Napoleon´s wife. She was much revered in Martinique. This came to an end when she persuaded Napoleon to reintroduce slavery, because she couldn´t do without slaves. So when an unknown „assassin“ beheaded the statue in the early 1990s and stained it with blood, nobody found it necessary to restore it.

BARBADOS, Bridgetown
Barbados war die letzte Station unserer Reise, von hier aus flogen wir nach Hause.Die Insel gehört zum Commonwealth, ist aber unabhängig. Sie vereint britische Kultur und karibisches Klima. Das gibt ihr einen besonderen Charme. Sie hat den Spitznamen „Little England“. Man findet hier britische Architektur, britische Sportarten und den „Fünf-Uhr-Tee“. Die Hauptstadt ist Bridgetown. Die Landschaft ist besonders abwechslungsreich. Während die Ostküste felsig und rauh ist, besitzt die Westküste ruhiges Gewässer und traumhafte Sandstrände. Das Landesinnere ist geprägt von tropischer Vegetation und Zuckerrohrfeldern.
Wenn man auf Barbados an Land geht, sollte man wissen, dass man keine Kleidung tragen darf, die dem Militär vorbehalten ist, wie z.B. Camouflagemuster. Da unser Flug erst am Abend ging, hatten wir genügend Zeit für einen ausführlichen Spaziergang durch Bridgetown.
Barbados was the last stop of our journey, we took the plane back home from here. The island belongs to the Commonwealth but is independant. Here British culture is united with Caribbean climate. That gives the island a special charme. It has the nickname „Little England“. here you can find British architecture, British sports and the „Fiveo´clock tea“. The capital is Bridgetown. Landscape is especially varied here. While the east coast is rough and rocky, the west coast has calm waters and beautiful sandy beaches. The interior of the country is characterized by tropical vegetation and plantations of sugarcane.
When you go ashore in Barbados you should know, that you mustn´t wear any clothes that remind of the military, such as Camouflage pattern. Because our plane didn´t leave before the late evening, there was plents of time for us to take a detailed walk round Bridgetown.

with the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao) I continue my travel report. This was my favourite part of the journey. Here you can read about part one:
Bonaire gehört zusammen mit Aruba und Curacao zu den ABC-Inseln, unterscheidet sich aber von den beiden anderen. Denn hier wird Umweltschutz besonders groß geschrieben. Die 18.000 Einwohner schätzen nämlich die Schönheit der Natur auf ihrer Insel sehr. Besonderen Schutz genießen die Korallenriffe, die die Insel umgeben. Aber auch an Land spielt die Natur eine wichtige Rolle. Hier sind über 200 Vogelarten zuhause, u.a. Kolibris und Papageien. Besonders geschützt ist die große Anzahl der Flamingos, die ihre Nistplätze im Süden der Insel haben. Es gibt auch zahlreiche Reptilienarten und eine reiche Pflanzenwelt.
Die Amtssprache auf Bonaire ist niederländisch, denn es ist Teil des niederländischen Königreiches, allerdings mit Sonderstatus. Die Hauptstadt heißt Kralendijk, was übersetzt Korallenriff bedeutet. Die Stadt besticht durch ihre pittoresken Kolonialbauten, die hübschen Geschäfte und Cafés und durch ihre Sauberkeit.
Bonaire belongs to the ABC-Islands like Curacao and Aruba too. But Bonaire is different. Environmental protection is very important here. Bonaire´s 18,000 inhabitants appreciate the beauty of their island´s nature very much. The coral reefs, which surround the island, enjoy special protection. But also on land nature plays an important role. More than 200 species of birds are at home here, such as hummingbirds and parrots. A big number of flamingos have their nesting sites in the south of the island. They enjoy special protection too. There´s also a big number of reptile species and a rich flora.
The official language of Bonaire is Dutch, because it belongs to the Netherlands, but with special status. The capital is Kralendijk, which means coral reef in English. The city captivates with its beautiful colonial buildings, its nice little shops and cafés and its cleanliness.

CURACAO, Willemstad
Curacao ist die bunteste und mit ihren 150.000 Einwohnern aus über 60 Nationen die größte Insel der ABC-Inseln. 125.000 Menschen leben in der Hauptstadt Willemstad, die seit 1998 UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe ist und einen der größten Naturhäfen der Welt besitzt. Willemstad wird auch als „Amsterdam der Karibik“ bezeichnet. Eine sanft schaukelnde Pontonbrücke, die „Königin-Emma-Brücke“, verbindet die Stadtteile Punda und Otrobanda. Besonders sehenswert ist der Schwimmende Markt, wo auf Booten Waren aus Venezuela lagern, die auf Marktständen verkauft werden.
Curacao gehörte bis 2010 zu den niederländischen Antillen und ist heute ein autonomer Staat. Die frühere Zugehörigkeit zu den Niederlanden spiegelt sich in der altholländischen Wohnkultur auf dieser Insel wider. Die Landschaft mit ihren meterhohen Kakteen, Agaven und Dornensträuchern wurde durch das trockene Klima geprägt. Von hier stammt der weltbekannte Bitterlikör aus Orangenschalen, den es in allen Farben gibt. Weltweit bekannt ist allerdings nur der Blue Curacao.
Auf Curacao haben wir uns am Vormittag zu einm Strand bringen lassen, nachmittags haben wir Willemstad erkundet.
Curacao is the most colourful one of the ABC-Islands. And it´s also the largest one with 150,000 inhabitants from more than 60 nations . 125,000 people live in its capital Willemstad, which is UNESCO world Heritage and which has one of the largest natural ports in the world. Willemstad is also known as „Amsterdam of the Caribbean“.A softly swinging pontoon bridge, the „Queen Emma Bridge“, connects the two districts Punda and Otrobanda. Especially worth seeing is the Swimming Market, where goods, that are stored on boats, are sold on booths.
Until 2010 Curacao belonged to the Netherlands Antilles, but today it´s an autonomous state. The former affiliation of the island to the Netherlands is reflected by its Old Dutch home decor. The landscape with meter high cacti, agaves and briars was shaped by the dry climate. The world famous bitter liqueur, which is made of orange peel is made here. It is available in all colours, but it´s world wide known only as the Blue Curacao.
On Curacao a boat took us to the beach in the morning, in the afternoon we explored Willemstad.

ARUBA, Oranjestad
Aruba ist die kleinste der ABC-Inseln. Es ist bereits seit 1986 autonom. Allerdings ist die ehemalige Verbindung mit den Niederlanden heute noch allgegenwärtig. Das macht sich sowohl in der Architektur bemerkbar als auch im Warenangebot. Amstel-Bier und Edamer Käse findet man an jeder Ecke.
Die Vegetation hat sich hier dem warmen, trockenen Klima angepasst. Hier findet man hauptsächlich Kakteen, Divi-Divi-Bäume und Dornengestrüpp. Die Temperaturen liegen das ganze Jahr über 25 °C, die Wassertemperatur bei 26°C. Das besondere Kapital dieser Insel sind die weißen, feinsandigen Strände. Der bekannteste ist der bis zu 120 m breite Eagle Beach an der Nordwest-Küste Arubas. Er zählt zu den schönsten Stränden der Welt und zieht Besucher aus der ganzen Welt an. Auch wir waren natürlich dort! Nachmittags ging´s nach Oranjestad, einem Einkaufsparadies.
Aruba is the smallest one of the ABC-Islands.It´s already autonomous since 1986. Indeed the former affiliation to the Netherlands becomes obvious as well by the architecture as by the product range. Amstel Beer or Edam Cheese are offered everywhere.
Vegetation has adapted to the warm and dry climate here. Mainly cacti, Divi-Divi trees and thorns grow here. Temperatures are at about 25 °C all year round, water temperatures are at 26°C. The special feature of the island are its white, fine sandy beaches. The most famous one is up to 120 m wide Eagle Beach on the northwest coast of Aruba. It´s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and it attracts visitors from all over the world. Of course we were there too! In the afternoon we visited Oranjestad, a shopping paradise.

wenn man 25 Jahre verheiratet ist und nie eine richtige Hochzeitsreise gemacht hat, dann wird es Zeit, das nachzuholen! Ein Traumziel war auch schnell gefunden: Eine Kreuzfahrt durch die Karibik sollte es sein. Dort herrschen im Januar Temperaturen um die 30°C, ideal um dem trüben Wetter in unseren Breiten für eine Weile zu entfliehen, dachten wir, mein Herzblatt und ich. Und so flogen wir von Düsseldorf nach Bridgetown/Barbados, wo wir an Bord unseres Kreuzfahrtschiffes gingen.

when you are married for 25 years and have never done a honeymoon, it´s time to catch it up. It wasn´t difficult to find a dream destination: A Caribbean cruise was the plan. There are temperatures of about 30°C in January, perfect to escape the dreary weather in our latitudes we – my sweetheart and I – thought. And so we took a flight from Düsseldorf to Bridgetown/Barbados. There we got on board of our cruise vessel.

Am Tag der Einschiffung hatten wir keine Gelegenheit mehr, uns Bridgetown anzuschauen, das holten wir aber am Ende unserer Reise nach!
Unser erster Tag an Bord war ein Seetag, an dem wir die Annehmlichkeiten des Schiffes genossen. Es war unsere 4. Reise mit dieser Flotte, daher war uns das Schiff nicht ganz unbekannt. Auf diesem Schiff gibt es genügend Sonnenliegen an Deck und auch ausreichend Plätze im Schatten, was wir immer sehr wichtig finden. Braten in der Sonne ist nämlich nicht unser Ding!
On the day of our embarkation we had no opportunity to explore Bridgetown, but we did at the end of our trip!
Our first day on board was a day at sea, perfect to enjoy the amenities of the ship. It was our 4th trip with this fleet and so we knew the ship a bit already. It provides plenty of sun beds on deck and sufficiant areas in the shade, which we always appreciate very much. It´s not our cup of tea to roast in the sun.

Am zweiten Morgen wachten wir etwa 180 nautische Meilen weiter nördlich auf, nämlich in:

GUADELOUPE, Pointe-à-Pitre
Guadeloupe gehört zu den französichen Antillen und somit zu Frankreich. Die Insel hat die Form eines Schmetterlings. Der rechte Flügel nennt sich Grande Terre und ist flacher als der linke. Hier wird hauptsächlich Zuckerrohr angebaut. Der linke Flügel, Basse Terre, erhebt sich – entgegen seinem Namen – viel höher und ist durch seinen Vulkan Soufrière geprägt. Hier gibt es eine reiche Vegetation mit einem tropischen Regenwald, heiße Quellen und Schwefelfelder. Pointe-à-Pietre liegt genau in der Mitte der beiden Flügel und ist nicht die Hauptstadt der Insel. Diese heißt ebenfalls Basse Terre.
Auf Guadeloupe hatten wir einen Ausflug gebucht. Wir fuhren mit dem Bus an den schönsten Strand der Insel, nämlich nach Saint-Anne im Süden von Grande Terre. Wir konnten es nämlich nicht erwarten, Bekanntschaft mit dem karibischen Meer zu machen!
Guadeloupe is part of the French Antilles and thus belongs to France. The island has got the shape of a butterfly. The right wing is called Grande Terre and it´s flatter than the left one. They mainly grow sugarcane here. The left wing, Basse Terre, rises up – in contrary to its name – much higher, and it´s characterized by its volcano Soufrière. Here you find a rich vegetation including an extended tropical rain forest, hot springs and sulfur fields. Pointe-à-Pietre is situated right in the middle of the two wings, and it´s not the capital of the island. This is called Basse terre as well.
We had booked an excursion here in Guadeloupe. A bus took us to the most beautiful beach of the isle, which is in Saint-Anne in the south of Grande Terre. We could not wait to make acquaintance with the Caribbean Sea!

DOMINIKA, Rouseau
Diese kleine Insel wurde an einem Sonntag von Christoph Kolumbus entdeckt und ist seit 1978 unabhängig. Sie gehört zu den Kleinen Antillen. Die Landschaft ist sehr abwechslungsreich, weshalb die Insel auch „Naturinsel“ genannt wird. Der Nationalpark Morne Trois Pitons ist seit 1997 Weltnaturerbe. Im Carib Territory, einem Reservat leben noch ca. 500 Indianer vom Urstamm der Kariben, die letzten Ureinwohner der Karibik. Rouseau ist nicht nur die größte Stadt auf Dominika, sondern auch deren Hauptstadt. Die haben wir uns angesehen:u
This small island was discovered on a Sunday by Christoph Columbus and it is independant since 1978. It belongs to the Lesser Antilles. Its landscape is very diversified. This is why the isle is called Natural Island. The National Park Morne Trois Pitons is World Natural Heritage since 1997. In the reservation Carib Territory still live about 500 Indians of the original tribe of the Caribs, the last natives of the Caribbean. Rouseau is not only the biggest town of Dominika, it´s also its capital. We had a walk around there:

ST. LUCIA, Castries
St. Lucia wird auch die grüne Perle der kleinen Antillen genannt, denn ihre grüne, hügelige Landschaft ist einzigartig. Die beiden inaktiven Vulkane Gros Piton und Petit Piton, die sog. Zuckerhüte, sind das Wahrzeichen der Antillen. Frankreich und England stritten sich lange Zeit um diese fruchtbare Insel, auf der heute Bananen und Kakao angepflanzt werden. Die Hauptstadt heißt Castries und besitzt den größten Hafen der Insel. Hier herrscht ein buntes, karibisches Treiben, und die Menschen hier sind ausgesprochen freundlich.
St. Lucia is also known as the green pearl of the Lesser Antilles, because its green, hilly landscape is unique. The two inactive volcanoes Gros Piton and Petit Piton, the so called Sugar Loafs, are the landmark of the Antilles. France and England quarreled about this fertile isle, on which bananas and cocoa are planted today. The capital Castries has the biggest harbour of the isle. a colourful Caribbean bustle, and people are extremely friendly here.

GRENADA, St. George´s
Grenada wird auch Gewürzinsel genannt. Und tatsächlich umfängt einen ein Duft aus Muskat, Nelken, Zimt und Ingwer beim Betreten der Insel. Grenada ist weltweit der Hauptexporteur von Muskatnuss. Hier leben nur 100000 Menschen auf einer Fläche von 612 Quadratkilometern. Es wird Englisch gesprochen. Die Hauptstadt St. George´s liegt malerisch am Fuße eines inaktiven Vulkanes in einer langen Bucht und wurde in der Kolonialzeit von zwei Festungen geschützt: Fort George und Fort Frederick. Das Herz von St. George´s ist der Marktplatz, wo man alles kaufen kann, was die Insel zu bieten hat.
Grenada is also known as Spice Island. Actually a scent of nutmeg, cloves, cinnamon and ginger surrounds you once you have set foot on the island. Worldwide Grenada is main exporter of nutmeg. Only 100000 people live here on 612 square kilometres. They speak English. The capital St. George´s is situated picturesquely at the foot of an inactive volcano in a long bay. In the colonial period it was defended by two fortresses: Fort George and Fort Frederick. Heart of St. George´s is the market square, where you can buy everything the island has to offer.

Von Grenada aus ging es ca. 400 nautische Meilen nach Westen zu den ABC-Inseln, die wir 2 Tage später nach einem weiteren, herrlichen Seetag erreichten.
Vom zweiten Teil der Reise werde ich jedoch in einem weiteren Beitrag berichten, denn sonst würde dieser hier zu lang werden. Für mich war der zweite Teil der schönere. Ihr dürft also gespannt sein!
From Grenada the ship took us about 400 nautical miles further west to the ABC islands, where we arrived two days later after another beautiful day at sea.
I will report of the second part of our journey in an extra post, otherwise this one would come out too long. From my point of view the second part was the nicer one. So you may be curious!
obwohl laut Kalender der Herbst Mitte Oktober längst Einzug gehalten hatte, sagte das Wetter etwas anderes. Bei Temperaturen von 22-25 °C passt das Wort ´Spätsommer` viel besser. Ideale Bedingungen, um einen Kurztrip (6 Tage) ins wunderschöne Elsass zu unternehmen. Also fuhren wir nach Colmar und quartierten uns in einem sehr schönen Hotel am Stadtrand ein. Von dort starteten wir unsere Erkundungsfahrten. Als erstes war natürlich Colmar selbst an der Reihe.

although the calendar said it was already autumn in Mid-October, the weather said something different. Temperatures of 22-25°C go better with the season ´Indian Summer`. Perfect conditions for a short trip (6 days) to Alsace. That´s why we drove to Colmar. Our lovely suburban hotel served as the ideal starting point for our excursions. First of course we visited Colmar itself.
Colmar
Colmar ist hinter Straßburg und Mülhausen mit ca. 70500 Einwohnern die drittgrößte Stadt im Elsass und liegt an der Elsässer Weinstraße. Die bezaubernde Stadt ist bekannt für ihre gut erhaltenen Gebäude, besonders aus dem Mittelalter, der Renaissance und dem Klassizismus.
Eine besondere Sehenswürdigkeit ist ´Klein Venedig` ein Viertel mit wunderschönen alten Häusern und Brücken.
Colmar
After Strasbourgh and Muehlhausen Colmar, with about 70500 inhabitants, is the third largest city in Alsace and it is situated on the wine route of Alsace. This lovely town is known for its well-preserved buildings, especially of the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Classicism.
A special attraction is ´Little Venice` which is a quarter with beautiful old houses and bridges.
Freiburg im Breisgau
Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir vom französichen Städtchen Colmar in die deutsche Stadt Freiburg. Als wir uns dem Münster näherten, bemerkten wir schon das bunte Treiben des bekannten Martinsmarktes, der stark an einen französichen Markt erinnert. Der Markt bietet ein vielfältiges Angebot, das je nach Jahreszeit variiert.
Nach dem Marktbesuch bummelten wir noch durch die Altstadt und schauten uns das Neue Rathaus, das gar nicht neu aussieht, das Martinstor und das Historische Kaufhaus an. Ein wenig Shopping stand auch noch auf dem Programm, bevor wir zurück nach Colmar fuhren.
Freiburg in Breisgau
The next day we drove from the French town Colmar to the German town Freiburg. When we approached the Münster, we got aware of the hustle and bustle of the well known Martinsmarkt, which very much resembles a French market. The market provides a varied offer, which differs depending on the season.
After having visited the market, we strolled through the old town and visited the New Town Hall, which doesn´t look new at all, the Martinstor and the Historc Department Store. A bit of shopping was also part of our program, before we returned back to Colmar.
Riquewihr
Wenn man im Elsass ist, darf man es auf keinen Fall versäumen, nach Riquewihr zu fahren. Dieser malerische Ort ist ein wahrer Touristenmagnet und bietet unzählige Fotomotive. Man kann ihn durchaus auch sonntags besuchen (wie wir es gemacht haben), denn dann sind alle Läden, Cafés und Restaurants geöffnet.

When you are in Alsace, you musn´t miss to visit Riquewihr. This picturesque place is a true tourist magnet and offers countless photo opportunities. You can definitely visit it on Sundays too (like we did), because all the shops, cafés and restaurants are open.
Straßburg
Das Beste kommt zum Schluss, so sagt man. Das trifft unbedingt auch auf diese Reise zu, denn als letztes Ziel unseres Elsass-Trips stand Straßburg auf dem Programm. Im Nachhinein würden wir unsere Zelte in Colmar vorher abbrechen und auf dem Nachhauseweg noch einmal in Straßburg übernachten. So hätten wir uns einige Kilometer ersparen können. Aber hinterher ist man ja immer schlauer. Wie dem auch sei, Straßburg war das absolute Highlight dieser Reise. Auch wenn das Straßburger Münster wie ein Abklatsch des Kölner Domes aussieht, dem ein Turm fehlt, hat uns diese Stadt vollkommen in ihren Bann gezogen! Die Altstadt, genauer gesagt das Viertel ´Petite France`, ist so wunderschön, dass man sich einfach darin verlieben muss!
Strasbourg
The best comes last, that´s what they say. And that´s definitely true for our little journey as well, because the last destination of our trip to Alsace was Strasbourgh. In retrospect we should have packed our bags in Colmar and stay another night in Strasbourgh on our way home. That would have saved us a lot of kilometres. But afterwards you are always smarter, aren´t you? Nevertheless, Strasbourgh definitely was our journey´s highlight. Even though the Munster of Strasbourgh looks like a copy of Cologne Cathedral with only one tower, this town cast her spell over us! The old town, to say it precisely the quarter ´Petite France`, is so beautiful that you can´t help but fall in love with it!

Ende August haben wir eine Woche auf der Donau verbracht. Mit dem Schiff von Passau nach Budapest, das war der Plan. Aber lasst mich ganz am Anfang beginnen:
Da uns die Anreise von Köln nach Passau zu weit war, legten wir einen Zwischenstopp in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz ein und übernachteten in einem Landgasthof. Von dort war es nicht weit nach Regensburg. Da wir noch viel Zeit hatten, bevor wir um 15 Uhr an Bord gehen konnten, machten wir am nächsten Vormittag dort eine kleine Stadtbesichtigung. Hier entstanden die ersten schönen Bilder:

by the end of August we spent a week on the river Donau. From Passau to Budapest, that was the plan. But let me start from the very beginning:
The way from Cologne to Passau seemed a bit too long, so we had a stop at Neumarkt/Oberpfalz. We spent the night in a little country inn. From there it was an hour´s drive to Regensburg. We still had plenty of time until we could go on board, so we had a little city tour there the next morning. See the first nice pictures:

Von Regensburg aus waren es nur noch 125 Kilometer bis Passau, und wir hatten genug zeit, das Auto zum Parkplatz zu bringen und uns mit dem Shuttle zum Schiff bringen zu lassen. Um 17 Uhr legten wir ab. Am nächsten Morgen wachten wir in Melk/Österreich auf. Da wir nur 10 Minuten Fußweg von der Altstadt entfernt lagen, machten wir uns nach dem Frühstück auf, um diese zu erkunden. Das berühmte Kloster konnten wir schon aus der Ferne bewundern. Die Stadt ist aber nicht nur berühmt für ihr Kloster, sondern auch für leckeren Marillenlikör und -schnaps!
From Regensburg we only had a 125 kilometer´s ride to Passau, and so there was plenty of time to park the car there and take the shuttle to the boat. We casted off at 5 pm. The next morning we woke up in Melk/Austria. There was only a 10 minutes´ walk to the old town, and so we went off to explore the town after breakfast. We already could admire the famous monastery from the distance. But the town isn´t only famous for its monastery, but also for its tasty apricot liqueur and -schnapps!

Viel Zeit hatten wir allerdings nicht hier in Melk, da wir schon um die Mittagszeit weiterfuhren Richtung Wien. Die österreichische Hauptstadt erreichten wir schon am Nachmittag. Da wir etwas außerhalb anlegten (in Nussbaum), gingen wir abends nicht mehr von Bord, sondern genossen die Landschaft, das herrliche Wetter und den Abend an Deck:
We couldn´t spend much time in Melk, because we already left for Wien around noon. We got to the Austrian Capital in the late afternoon. As the ship had docked outside the city (in Nussbaum) we didn´t leave for Vienna in the afternoon, but we enjoyed the landscape, the lovely weather and the evening on the upper deck:

Am späten Abend legten wir ab und hatten noch einen wunderschönen Blick auf Wien bei Nacht.Es ging weiter in Richtung Bratislava, der Hauptstadt der Slowakischen Republik. Wir erfuhren nun, dass wir nicht mit dem Schiff bis Budapest gelangen konnten, da die Donau Niedrigwasser hatte. Kein Wunder bei den trockenen und heißen Sommer! Wir erreichten Bratislava am frühen Morgen und hatten direkt in der Altstadt festgemacht! Da es erst am übernächsten Tag mittags zurück Richtung Passau gehen sollte, hatten wir 2 1/2 Tage Zeit, um die Stadt zu erkunden. Das Angebot mit dem Bus nach Budapest zu fahren, lehnten wir ab. 9 Stunden im Bus incl. Stadtrundfahrt war uns zu viel. Außerdem hat Bratislava einiges zu bieten! Zunächst machten wir eine Stadtrundfahrt:
We left Vienna late this evening and still had a wonderful view at Vienna by night. Now we were on our way to Bratislava, the Capital of the Slovak Republic. We were told, that we definitely couldn´t get to Budapest by boat, because the River Donau had low water. This wasn´t a big surprise in this hot and dry summer! We reached Bratislava in the early morning and had docked right in the old town of the city! We wouldn´t leave Bratislava until the day after next, so we had 2 1/2 days to explore the city. We rejected the offer to visit Budapest by bus because we didn´t want to spend 9 hours in the bus, and Bratislava had so much to offer! First we took a city tour:

Als kleinen Trost, dass wir nicht nach Budapest fahren konnten, schenkte uns die Reederei einen Ausflug in die ´Kleine Tatra` mit Besichtigung der Biberburg, Weinverkostung und Besuch einer landestypischen Modra-Keramikmanufaktur.
The shipping company had a little gift for those who didn´t visit Budapest by bus. It was a bus trip to the ´Small Tatras` including a visit to Beaver Castle, a winery with wine tasting and a typical Modra-ceramics factory.
Nun begaben wir uns wieder auf den Rückweg und waren schon bald wieder in Österreich. Wir fuhren an Wien vorbei und weiter durch die wunderschöne Landschaft der Wachau. Einen letzten Halt machten wir in Dürnstein, jenem Ort, wo einst der englische König Richard Löwenherz eingekerkert war.
Now we went on our way back and soon we reached Austria again. We passed Vienna and the ship took us through the beautiful landscape of the Wachau. Our last stop was in Dürnstein, that place where the English king Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned long ago.
Am nächsten Morgen waren wir wieder in Passau. Der Shuttle brachte uns zum Parkplatz und wir fuhren zurück in die Heimat, um den endlosen Sommer weiterhin zu genießen!
The next morning we were back in Passau. The shuttle took us to the car park and we drove home again to keep on enjoying the endless summer!

früher bin ich sehr häufig nach Griechenland in den Urlaub gefahren. Ich schätze, dass ich mindestens schon ca. 15 mal dort war. Festland, Chalkidiki, Peloponnes und natürlich die Inseln. Was mich immer wieder dort hin gezogen hat? Die Kultur, die gastfreundlichen Menschen, das herrlich klare Meer, das besondere Licht, das wunderbare Wetter, die Musik, das Essen… Wer Griechenland kennt, weiß, wovon ich rede! Früher war ich mit Rucksack und Zelt unterwegs – ohne vorher etwas zu buchen, und bin von Ort zu Ort getrampt. Ich bin mit Bahn und Fähre nach Griechenland gelangt, von Brindisi in Italien nach Igomeniza oder Patras. Zweimal bin ich auch schon mit dem Auto nach Kavala gefahren und dann mit der Fähre nach Thassos übergesetzt. Später bin ich immer geflogen. 1989 war ich zum ersten Mal auf Kreta, lange bevor der Touristenrummel einsetzte. Da war Malia noch ein Dörfchen mit einem Campingplatz, sonst nichts. Früher hat man in den Tavernen noch in die Töpfe geschaut, um sich etwas auszusuchen. In den Geschäften bekam man einen Tee angeboten und kam mit den Menschen ins Gespräch. Später wurde Griechenland immer touristischer und man musste suchen, um noch das alte Flair zu erleben. Aber man findet es auch heute noch.
Als ich älter wurde, wollte ich dann auch etwas mehr von der Welt sehen und Griechenland ist etwas in Vergessenheit geraten. Ich wollte nun auch andere Länder und Städte erkunden und deren Menschen kennen lernen.
Mittlerweile habe ich fast alles gesehen, was auf meiner to visit-Liste steht (Hawaii fehlt noch!) und daher war es an der Zeit, mal wieder nach Griechenland zu fahren. Wir entschieden uns für Rhodos. Ich war vorher schon 2 mal dort und habe die Insel bereits ganz gut kennen gelernt. Daher sollte es dieses Mal ein ruhiger Strandurlaub werden. Besonders gut hatte mir damals der Ort Lindos gefallen und wurde deshalb unser diesjähriges Ziel. Heute, wo langsam die Knochen anfangen zu schmerzen, sind die Ansprüche allerdings etwas gestiegen. Da will ich im Urlaub bequem und ruhig schlafen, gut essen und mich in einer ansprechenden Umgebung aufhalten. Mit unserem Hotel – 1,5 km von Lindos entfernt – haben wir absolut die richtige Wahl getroffen. Es war das schönste Hotel, in dem ich mich jemals aufgehalten habe, einfach wie im Paradies!

in the past I spent very many holidays in Greece. I suppose I´ve been there at least 15 times before. Mainland, Chalkidiki, Peloponnese, and of course the isles. What pulled me there all the time? The culture, the hospitable people, the clear blue sea, the beautiful weathr, the music, the food… Those of you who know Greece know what I´m talking about! In the past I travelled with a backpack and a tent without booking anything in advance, and I hitch-hiked from one place to another. I got to Greece by train and ferry from Brindisi in Italy to Igoumenitsa or Patras. Twice I travelled by car to Kavala and then took the ferry to Thassos. Later I always got to Greece by plane. In 1989 I visited Crete for the first time, that was long before it became this touristy. Malia still was a little village with nothing but a campside these days. For making your choice in the taverns I used to go into the kitchen for a look into the pots and pans. In the shops I was offered a tea and I had a talk with the people there. Later on Greece became more and more touristy, and you had to search a bit for the old flair. But you can still find it today.
When I grew older I wanted to travel the world and I almost forgot about Greece. I wanted to explore other countries and cities and meet the people there.
Meanwhile I have seen almost everything on my to-visit-list (Hawaii is still missing), and so the time was right for Greece again. We decided to go to Rhodes. I´ve already visited Rhodes twice before and know the isle quite well. That´s why it was supposed to be a quiet beach holiday this time. I especially liked the village of Lindos before, and so we decided to go there this time. But as the old bones start aching meanwhile, the demands are rising a bit. Now we prefer to sleep in a quiet place and comfortable bed, eat and drink good and spend our time in an appealing environment. Our hotel – 1,5 km from Lindos village – absolutely was the right choice. It was the most beautiful hotel I´ve ever stayed at. Simply like in paradise!
