Complementary colours – Reni´s Odds and Sods

heute machen wir einen kleinen Ausflug in die Farbenlehre. Und zwar soll das Augenmerk auf den Komplementärfarben liegen:

Unter Komplementärfarben versteht man zwei Farben, die sich im Farbkreis gegenüberstehen. Die Primärfarben Rot, Gelb und Blau stehen im Zentrum des Farbkreises. Dazu gruppieren sich die Sekundärfarben Grün, Orange und Violett, die jeweils aus der Mischung von 2 Primärfarben entstanden sind. Es stehen sich immer eine Primär- und eine Sekundärfarbe gegenüber, und zwar Rot und Grün, Gelb und Orange und Blau und Violett. Diese Farbenpaare nennt man Komplementärfarben. Die dritte Kategorie sind die Tertiärfarben, die aus der Mischung von einer Primär- und einer benachbarten Sekundärfarbe entstanden sind. Die Tertiärfarben, die sich gegenüber stehen, sind ebenfalls Komplementärfarben, z.B. Rot-violett und Gelb-Grün.

Die Komplementärfarben harmonieren besonders gut miteinander. Sie machen das Auge zufrieden. Das Auge sucht geradezu nach der Komplementärfarbe. Das kann man mit einen kleinen Test beweisen, den ich immer gerne mit meinen Schülern gemacht habe:

Nimm einen großen Bogen Fotokarton in einer Primär- oder Sekundärfarbe und schaue ihn mindestens 2-3 Minuten intensiv an, möglichst ohne viel zu blinzeln. Dann mach deine Augen zu. Es erscheint dir ein Nachbild, und zwar rate mal in welcher Farbe? Richtig! In der Komplementärfarbe!!!

So, jetzt schaut euch mal die Farben meines aktuellen Looks an. Und sage mir mal jemand, dass die beiden Farben nicht wunderbar miteinander harmonieren!

Complementary Colours are those which are positioned opposite to each other in the colour wheel. The Primary Colours red, yellow and blue are in the centre of the colour wheel. The Secondary Colours green, orange and violet join them. There is always a Secondary Colour standing opposite of the Primary Colour: Red and green, yellow and orange, blue and violet. These colour pairs are called Complementary Colours. The third category of colours in the colour wheel is called Tertiary Colours. Those Tertiary Colours which are opposite of each other are also called Complementary Colours e.g. red-violet and yellow-green.

Complementary Colours go especially well together. They satisfy the eye. The eye actually yearns for the Complementary Colour. You can prove it by a little experiment, which I always liked to try on my students:

Take a big sheet of photocard of a Primary or Secondary Colour and look at it intensively for at least 2-3 minutes, if possible without blinking very much. Then close your eyes and you will see a post-image. Guess which colour it has? Right! The Complementary Colour!!!

Well, and now look at the colours of my recent look. Don´t tell me anyone the two colours are not perfect together!

Ich muss allerdings einräumen, dass das Grün meiner Hose nicht dem Grün aus dem Farbkreis entspricht, aber das wollen wir mal nicht so eng sehen, oder?

Und nun seht ihr den kompletten Look: Ich trage eine olivgrüne Utilityhose, einen roten Rollkragenpullover mit Glockenärmeln, schwarze Schnürer und eine karierte Schirmmütze.

Actually I have to admit that the green of my pants is not like the green of the colour wheel, but we do not want to see it that tight, do we?

And now you see the complete look: I´m wearing khaki-green utility pants, a red turtleneck sweater with bellsleeves, black laced flats and a checked flatcap.
