Sorrento – Reni´s Odds and Sods

Hallo meine Lieben,

hier kommt nun endlich – mit reichlich Verspätung – der Bericht meiner Italienreise, die ich im März unternommen habe. (Einige Bilder habe ich ja bereits auf Instagram gepostet.) Von Düsseldorf aus brachte uns der Flieger nach Rom, wo wir wir Nacht blieben. Obwohl ich vorher schon dreimal in Rom war, habe ich es bisher noch nie geschafft, in den Petersdom zu gelangen. Die lange, lange Warteschlange war immer zu abschreckend. Doch dieses Mal musste es dann doch mal sein. Obwohl es regnete und viel kälter war, als wir es für Mitte März gehofft hatten, stellten wir uns an. Wegen der Sicherheitskontrollen, die vor dem Eingang stattfanden, ging es nur im Schneckentempo voran. Gott sei Dank hörte es wenigstens irgendwann auf zu regnen. Nach ca. 1,5 Stunden hatten wir es endlich geschafft und wurden nicht enttäuscht:

finally – with quite a delay – I come along with the post about my trip to Italy, which we took in March. (I´ve already posted some of the pictures on Instagram.) The plane took us from Düsseldorf to Rome where we stayed for one night. Although I have already been in Rome three times before, I haven´t managed yet to get into St Peter´s Basilica. The long, long queue always scared me off. But this time we definitely wanted to get in. Although it was raining and much colder than we had hoped it would be in the mid of March, we lined up. Because of the security controls in front of the entrance we only proceeded at a snail´s pace. Fortunately it stopped raining after an hour. After 1,5 hours we finally made it and we were not disappointed:

Von Rom fuhren wir mit dem Bus weiter nach Sorrent, wo wir für für eine Woche Quartier bezogen, um von dort aus die Umgebung zu erkunden. Sorrent liegt auf einer Halbinsel in der Bucht von Neapel. Das Stadtzentrum liegt auf den Klippen und bietet einen wunderschönen Blick auf das Meer und den Hafen. Sorrent hat ca. 16500 Einwohner. Im historischen Zentrum der Stadt findet man zahllose Cafés und Geschäfte. Die Piazza Tasso und die Chiesa di San Francesco, eine Kirche aus dem 14. Jhdt., sind besonders zu erwähnen. Sorrent ist der ideale Ausgangspunkt für Exkursionen nach Neapel, die Insel Capri, Pompeji, den Vesuv und natürlich die wunderschöne Amalfiküste.

Auf unserer Liste standen Amalfiküste, Neapel, Vesuv und Pompeji. Die letzten drei Ziele fielen leider aus, da uns ein Virus heimsuchte und wir 3 Tage im Hotel und dessen näherer Umgebung verbrachten. Den Vesuv sahen wir leider nur aus der Ferne:

From Rome a bus took us to Sorrento, our base for a week, from where we explored the area. Sorrento is situated on a peninsula in the bay of Naples. The city centre rises on the cliffs and offers a lovely view at the sea and the harbour. Sorrento has got about 16500 inhabitants. In the historic centre you find lots of cafés and shops. The Piazza Tasso and the church Chiesa di San Francesca from the 14th century have to be especially mentioned. Sorrento is the ideal starting point for excursions to Naples, the isle of Capri, Pompeji, the Vesuvius and of course the beautiful Amalfi coast.

We had the Amalfi coast, Naples, the Vesuvius and Pompeji on our list. Unfortunately the last three destinations had to be cancelled because of a virus which infected us. And so we had to stay in and near our hotel for 3 days. We only saw the Vesuvio from the distance:

Aber die Amalfiküste konnten wir zumindest erkunden:

Auf unserer Bustour von Sorrent entlang der Küste nach Amalfi saßen wir zufällig auf der richtigen Seite, so dass wir nicht nur während der Fotostopps, sondern auch während der Fahrt Bilder machen konnten. Glück muss man haben! Manchmal ging es so steil hinunter, dass ich die Luft anhalten musste! Aber diese Strecke war nicht nur deshalb atemberaubend, wie die Bilder zeigen:

On our bus trip from Sorrento along the coast to Amalfi we happened to sit on the right side. So we couldn´t only take photos during our stopps, but also while driving. Lucky us! Sometimes it went down so steeply that I stopped breathing! But this route wasn´t only breathtaking for this reason, as you can see in the pictures:

Überall in der Gegend um Sorrent findet man Zitronenplantagen. Wir besichtigten ebenfalls eine und hatten Gelegenheit, die hiesigen Produkte zu verköstigen wie Limonchello, Marmeladen, Olivenöle usw.

All about the area of Sorrento you find lemon plantations. We also visited one and had the opportunity to try local products such as Limonchello, marmelades, olive oils etc..

Auf dem Rückweg von Sorrent nach Rom blieben wir noch eine Nacht in Rom und besuchten die antiken Stätten und einige andere Sehenswürdigkeiten:

Obwohl wir nicht alles gesehen haben, was wir vor hatten, war dies eine wunderschöne Reise, die ich sehr empfehlen kann. Ein kleiner Tipp zum Schluss: Beim nächsten Mal würde ich frühestens Mitte April hierhin fahren, denn es war Mitte März noch recht kühl (12-15 °C) und unbeständig!

Althhough we couldn´t see everything we wanted, this journey was beautiful and I can highly recommend it. Finally a litle tip of mine: Don´t go there before mid of April because in the mid of March it was still too cool (12-15 °C) and unstable!
